Living high up in the mountains is a passion for some people. A chalet is usually considered as an ideal place of shelter in the mountains especially in the Alpine regions. A chalet is used widely in regions like the middle Himalayas and alpine regions of Switzerland. Though the design, architecture and engineering of a chalet differs from place to place, the common ingredient that is found in the construction materials of all the summer chalets is wood and stone.

A chalet is usually identified as a dwelling place that is made up of wood and stone and has sloping roofs. A chalet has to b e necessarily located in the mountains. In the Alpine regions the chalet is known as the herdsman’s hut. Today in most of the Alpine regions any dwelling that is located in the mountains and is in the vicinity of a ski hill, is known as a chalet. A summer chalet is only accessible only in the summers during winter due to the dropping temperatures and snow it is impossible to inhabit such a chalet.

The summer chalets are usually used by herders. During the summers the herders produce and preserve the milk and milk products. In the period of winter they come down from the pastures and Alpine regions to the lower regions.
